Rock Island Arsenal M15 General Officer's Pistol

Most 1911 variants pass through your hands and leave you cold. This one has a name plate that reads GEN. PAUL W. REED JR., and a stack of paperwork that ties the pistol to the man who carried it. That combination is what separates a curiosity from a piece of documented Army history.

The M15 was the Army's answer to a simple problem. Generals wanted a sidearm they could actually carry, so Rock Island Arsenal took the Government Model, cut the slide and barrel down to a 4.25 inch length, and turned it into a compact .45 ACP that still ran the familiar controls. The slide here wears the gold-filled General Officer Model R.I.A. roll mark, the signature of pistols built through the arsenal's General Officer Pistol Program. The finish is a deep blued slide over a Parkerized frame, with checkered brown grips carrying the engraved silver name plate on the right panel. A fixed blade front and notch rear sit low on the slide. The arched mainspring housing and grip safety read pure GI.

The documentation is what makes it sing. A 1976 DD Form 1149 records the bill of sale and lawful government transfer. A 2013 Department of the Army FOIA response confirms the pistol was inventoried under the General Officer's Pistol Program at Rock Island in 1976 and purchased by a general officer in 1982. Reed himself was a Korean War infantry platoon leader, Combat Infantry Badge and Bronze Star, who retired as a Brigadier General before a long career in Oklahoma law and public safety.
