Walther P88 Compact Prototype - V Serial Number

The slide on this one tells you exactly what it is. Roll-marked P88-Versuch under the P88 Compact billboard, Versuch being the German word for trial or experiment. This is a factory development gun from Walther's own engineering shop, not a production pistol that left through commercial channels. Walther built the full-size P88 to chase the wave of high-capacity service contracts in the late 1980s, then set about shrinking it into a Compact that could carry concealed and still feed from a healthy magazine. The pistols marked Versuch are the ones that came before the line settled.

Look closely at the construction and you can read the development story. The barrel and slide carry tooling marks and a banded, partly polished barrel exterior that production guns smoothed over. The frame is alloy with a matte black finish, the slide blued, and the early Walther banner with P88 COMPACT cut deep into the left flank. The grips are smooth black panels, wider and rounder than the checkered polymer that later production wore. You also get the hammer-drop decocker and the locked-breech action that gave the P88 its reputation for accuracy.

What draws the eye are the small inconsistencies. The contours around the dust cover and the muzzle don't match a catalog gun, and the machining shows where a hand was still working out the final shape. That's the appeal of a trial piece. It freezes a moment in the design before the drawings were locked.

Chambered in 9mm, the barrel is marked Walther 9mm x 19 on the right side. The bore is bright. Controls function crisply, and the decocker drops the hammer cleanly.

P88 Compact production was short and the standard guns are already scarce in the United States. A factory Versuch example is a different tier entirely. For the collector who chases Walther engineering or Cold War service-pistol development, this is a piece you rarely get a chance to hold.
