Smith & Wesson Model 4006 Performance Center Prototype

Most Performance Center guns trace back to a parts bin and a catalog page. This one traces back to a name. The accompanying Smith & Wesson Historical Foundation letter, signed by Roy G. Jinks, ties this 9mm Model 4006 directly to Judy Woolley, a fixture in early practical and Steel Challenge competition, with a ship date of March 2, 1991. The Performance Center had only existed for about a year at that point. That puts this gun at the very front of the program's history, built for one of the shooters S&W relied on to carry its name onto the line.

The build itself is pure early-90s race gun. A satin stainless frame and slide carry a frame-mounted safety, an up-swept beavertail, and full-length slide flutes that shave reciprocating mass. Up front sits an extended, ported-style barrel that runs well past the slide. The grips are checkered walnut, warm against the matte stainless. And the whole sighting system hangs off a B-Square scope mount, with the maker's name machined plainly into the bridge, carrying a period ProPoint electronic optic of the type Steel Challenge shooters leaned on hard in those years.

Worth noting: the action was tuned at the factory for a smooth single and double action pull, exactly the kind of work the Performance Center existed to do for its sponsored competitors. The letter spells all of it out, frame safety, beavertail, extended barrel, scope mount and tuned trigger.

The package includes the S&W blue plastic case, two high-capacity magazines with blue base pads, and the Historical Foundation letter that anchors every claim. For a collector chasing the roots of the Performance Center, a documented, shooter-owned gun from the program's first year is the kind of thing that rarely surfaces twice.
